im gonna go ahead and tell you what i like or what id buy....or what i already have...
I like the pioneer decks....pretty good price and good tuning havent had a problem with it yet MTX is another cheap/good product
I made my own box with the pioneer deck, alpine amp and 12 MTX sub and she hits pretty hard. i got a couple of people that can vouch for that

ok, kenwood as no bass, pioneer is more adjustable, but the gain is low and not very powerful, unless you get something powerful.sony is fine, picks up radio station the best aswell as alpine, both of those use xm radio if you want it.jvc kenwood use sirus radio.id go with alpine,or sony for the money. for speakers most of then are good, dont buy infinity speakers bc they are pre tuned and dont adjust well to any deck settings. for bass some lightning audio bumps for the buck, just be ready to buy new speakers every 6 months.fostgate is the most true rated amp, when you look at wattage on amps look for the fine print that says how much power at 12 volts, they all rate them at 14.4v.a 500w amp at 14.4v is more like 300w at 12v also check for rms watts not peak power.and when you buy speakers dont buy them bigger than your amp.like 400w speakers for a 600w amp. and dont get shit installed at circut city,or best buy.dashboard will do good work for 3 times the amount.

yes to make a really good box you need wood skills, then you have box types, ported, sealed, bandpass, speaker setup in the box if you want the speakers to be individual or open space, what volumetric space you want in the box, what material you use,so it depends on what type of speakers and what size you get.good subwoofer brands, mtx, fostgate, my favorite jl hands down, memphis is good , diamond audio, jbl, pioneer for the money, eclipse one of the best.id get some audio magazines and read whats new on the market.but build a box to fit your speakers, ive built a few boxes in my day.if you dont want to get real serious, then just buy a box and put speakers in it and an amp and turn it up.but there can be sick setups in a golf.it has nice space and setup for bass, then you get concerned with componets, crossovers, 2way 3way 4way speakers, mid bass speakers, wht type of tweeter you want dome, cone, piezo, ferrofluid cooled. what size and then placement of all of that, so that you get good imaging.it can get as involved as moter stuff if you let it.

me and tyler are really good at building box's we build his custom fit for his truck and we set it in there and shut the door and it amplified our voices. w/o the speaker in it.

deck depends on whether your planning on running a 4 ch amp or not for your highs. if your not planning on running one, and you plan on running good speakers, i would suggect a kenwood with the Burr Brown DAA converter(i have one of these right now), which is a digital to analog converter that will make the sound super clean. if you are planning on running a 4 ch amp, i would suggest an alpine without the internal amplifier(ive had one of these). there great at reproducing sound through the amp, just be sure not to run your rcas near power. great eq built in, and a very nice headunit.
as for speakers, i think one of the best for the money are some alpines. i have type-r components that i got on ebay for about 150 a pair shipped. these speakers sound excellent with the right setup. type-r or type-s would be good, type-e is just cheap stuff, so i wouldnt waist my money on them. pioneers are pretty good speakers as well, ive had my share of them. of course brands like jl, kicker, ads, etc, are going to be good, but they will also be expensive.
subwoofer, i also have a single 12 alpine type-r and it sounds great in the car, but doesnt make your truck rattle like hell too. i got a deal on it, which is the reason i got it, but before it i was looking at jls. jls are awesome subs, but pricey. if you want something cheaper go for some pioneers or kenwoods. rockfords are probably around the same price as the alpine, and i personally would take the apline.
amp depends on your sub. get one thas matched good with your subs power rating. both sub and amp have rms and max power, so try and get as close to those as you can, but try not to go above. i have a jl 250/1 on my apline and it sounds great, its a little less power then the sub can hold, but it makes it so there isnt a chance of the sub being overpowered.
as for a box, you can make your own if space is limited, but if you have the room i would suggest buying one, that way it is already sealed tight, the ports(if there are any) look good and the carpeting is very good. be sure to get a box that fits in the airspace for the sub you get.
i used to be really big into car audio, and ive tried to keep into it.

it doesnt matter, everything works with everything else. some people like to keep it all the same for eye apeal, but i personally think its pointless cause all companies dont make things good in every area, cept maybe alpine.

my opinion.... a CD player, nothin else. its wasted time and money... i used to be in it somewhat but one break in in one of my old cars just made me kick the system crap. im more of the go fast goodies kinda guy but, my suggests are as follows.. lol Deck- Alpine. i've had one, and i kick myself everyday for getting rid of that deck. pioneer is a good bang for the buck. i will never buy another sony in my life. i've had 3 or so and they all sucked my balls, especially when they had an amp and subs. Amp- Theres so many out there and i dont really know shit about em except how to hook em up and make em look pretty but, i've played with MTX, Fosgate and alpine. i've also had a few other cheap ones. if you want a good one, go with those or possibly pioneer. Subs- Don't go cheap. If you do, you'll suffer the consequences. I had MTX's in my car before they were stollen and i was in love with them. they were relatively cheap, and sounded awesome.
Keep everything in the post in mind, but NCVTEC probably knows as much or more about audio than most of the audio shops around here. i dont mean to knock anybody else on the board, but i've seen adam go through his share of stereo's and i have yet to be disappointed in a single one he's had or had him steer me wrong in anything that has to do with stereo.

pioneer decks are good and speaker wise i would go with infinity. They really tend to balance each other out.
