ok i got my dads saturn wagon for Xmas becuase its got a burnt vavle the shop told him like $1500 to fix includin labor and what not, so he said if i take it apart and take the head to a machine shop hell cover up to like $300 and if it runs more ill handle it, but bill has the tool to do it so i may just do that i dont know, BUT do i have to take the head out? my dad said he used to when it wasnt overhead cams, i took the VC off and it seems like the valves are just right there under the cams?, but before i start takin stuff apart i wanna know what i need to take apart...i gotta hurry this one up so i can have somthin to drive...
(i found out that the saturn got a replacement motor 3 years ago and a full auto-tranny rebuild about 2 years ago with new axles 3months ago....so this car should last me a while, 160xxx on the odometer, no clue of the motor tho)

You'll have to take the head out to machine it. I don't see how it's possible to do it any other way. My post is kinda late so you might've already found out, but I thought I'd be of help since I know alot about Saturns. Just curious SOHC or DOHC (twin cam) motor?!
Oh yeah, get used to topping the oil off, those suckers usually burn oil....at least the older ones.
Also, when you do this project, you'll need a new head gasket.
You have to disassemble like half the engine to do this, that's why the shops charge so much. I'd make it a weekend project.
I can also get ahold of some Saturn FSM's (Factory Service Manuals), if you want.
